Compare the routes

How hard is each event?

Distance alone says little. 200 km around Lake Constance is a very different day from 200 km over Alpine passes. For 6 events the cards show the WattRun difficulty index: it estimates the load of the main route in load points for a reference athlete and places the event on a scale from 1 to 5, next to a small elevation profile. For the Ötztaler Radmarathon there is also a full 16-week training plan on this site.

For every event the calendar adds a simple terrain rating based on the climbing per kilometer of the main route. If no elevation figure is given and the organizer describes the route as flat, it counts as flat. Without any figures the terrain stays open.

flat

Under 10 m of climbing per km. 6 events, for example Mecklenburger Seen Runde.

hilly

10 to 20 m of climbing per km. 12 events, for example Rund um Köln (Škoda Velodom).

mountainous

Over 20 m of climbing per km. 12 events, for example Ötztaler Radmarathon.

Notes on the data

  • Ranking: by participant numbers, with prestige as a corrective. The figures are inconsistent: sometimes entries, sometimes starters, often including all shorter routes. They show the order of magnitude but are not directly comparable. In Switzerland there are no reliable participant figures from No. 5 on, so the order there rests mainly on prestige.
  • Italy: The three Italian events come from the Italian part of WattRun's event catalog. Participant figures are only shown with a source; for Nove Colli no reliable figure was found.
  • Velothon Berlin: The Velothon (VeloCity Berlin) has been suspended since 2025, and whether it returns is open. That is why it is not on the list.
  • ADAC Cyclassics: For Hamburg, only the pro race on Aug 15, 2027 is officially on the UCI calendar. The mass-participation race usually takes place on the same day.
  • Neusiedler See Radmarathon: Whether the 127 km route returns in 2027 is still open.
  • Arlberg Giro: The Silvretta High Alpine Road is closed until 2030, so the 2026 route is shown.
  • Bodensee-Radmarathon: By participant numbers it would be No. 1 in Switzerland, but the route crosses three countries (CH, DE, AT).
  • No longer held: L'Étape Switzerland and the Gruyère Cycling Tour apparently no longer take place.
  • Just outside the top 10: Kärnten Radmarathon Bad Kleinkirchheim, Jun 6, 2027 (confirmed), about 640 starters.
  • Sources: Every card links the source of its date, either the organizer's official page or a report about it. For Tour d'Energie and Arber-Radmarathon only older participant figures are available.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the 2027 gran fondo calendar

Which gran fondos in 2027 are in the Alps?
This calendar has 13 events in the Alps, including the Dolomites: Glocknerkönig (Jun 6), Chasing Cancellara Zürich-Andermatt (Jun 26, expected), Dreiländergiro (Jun 27), Engadin Radmarathon (Jul 2–4), Maratona dles Dolomites (Jul 4), The Majestics UCI Granfondo (Jul 10, expected), Arlberg Giro (Aug 1), Granfondo San Gottardo (Aug 22, expected), Le Tour des Stations (Aug 28), Ötztaler Radmarathon (Aug 29), Swiss Cycling Alpenbrevet (Sep 4), Kitzbüheler Radmarathon (Sep 5, expected) and Alpen Challenge Lenzerheide (Sep 19, expected). Dates without a note are confirmed by the organizer. Rated hilly in this calendar, with 10 to 20 m of climbing per km, are Gran Fondo Strade Bianche, Tour d'Energie, Rhön-Radmarathon, Rund um Köln (Škoda Velodom), Nove Colli, Säntis Classic, Mondsee 5-Seen Radmarathon, Wachau Radmarathon, Arber-Radmarathon and Tortour (Ultracycling).
Which gran fondo is the hardest?
Among the classic gran fondos, Le Tour des Stations has the most climbing: 8,848 m over 241 km. Next come the Swiss Cycling Alpenbrevet in its Platinum version with 267 km and 6,800 m and the Ötztaler Radmarathon with 227 km and 5,500 m. The Tortour, at up to 1,000 km, is an ultracycling race and in a category of its own. The steepest per kilometer is the Glocknerkönig, a hill climb with 1,672 m over 27.3 km.
How far ahead should I start training?
For a targeted gran fondo build, plan 12 to 16 weeks. For an event in late August like the Ötztaler, that means starting between early May and early June, on top of a solid base from the winter. On this site you will find the 16-week Ötztaler training plan and a guide to winter base training for cycling.
When do entries open?
Each organizer sets its own entry dates, so check the official page or source linked on every card. Some events fill up: the figures in this list show ADAC Velotour (Eschborn-Frankfurt) and Dreiländergiro as sold out and Arlberg Giro as fully booked, and several events cap their field, such as Swiss Cycling Alpenbrevet at 3,250 riders. Places at the Maratona dles Dolomites are drawn by lottery, and according to the organizer the entry window runs from Oct 14 to Nov 10, 2026. Nove Colli entries open on Dec 5, 2026.
Which 2027 dates are already confirmed?
23 of the 33 dates are confirmed by the organizer (as of Oct 24, 2026). The other 10 are derived from previous years and marked as expected: Tour d'Energie, Rhön-Radmarathon, Säntis Classic, Chasing Cancellara Zürich-Andermatt, The Majestics UCI Granfondo, Arber-Radmarathon, Granfondo San Gottardo, Kitzbüheler Radmarathon, Bodensee-Radmarathon and Alpen Challenge Lenzerheide.
How does the "Set as goal" link work?
Every event with a confirmed date has a "Set as goal" link. It opens the free WattRun sign-up with that event already selected. Once you have created your account and finished onboarding, the event becomes your goal and your coach creates a training plan up to race day. You can also pick an event later on the goals page under "Choose event".
How does WattRun plan up to race day?
Tell WattRun your event and how much time you have each week. The plan runs in phases up to the event, first base training and then a build. Your coach adds the next weeks as you go, each one shortly before it starts, and every session adapts to your morning check-in and the time you have that day. WattRun is 100% free.
